Parenting Skills that Help You Become a Better Parent

Even if you've been a parent for years already, there is always room
to improve your skills. Every child is different and the needs of
every child will change as he or she gets older. This is why parents
have to figure out how to keep up with their growing kids and be ready
to make changes as they are called for. Here are some of the most
important parenting skills that will help you be the best parent you
can be.

Consistency is so important when it comes to disciplining your
children. A lot of parents have problems with this but if you don't
learn how to be it, you can be sure that your kids won't take your
attempts to discipline them seriously. You need to really put some
thought into your rules and consequences: don't make threats or
promises that you don't plan on keeping. For example, if you tell your
daughter she can't watch television for a week, don't let her watch
television for a week. When you give in you tell your kids that your
word isn't worth much and that it can safely be disregarded. Kids are
going to, of course, test their boundaries so you need to be firm.

One skill that's important for parents to develop is becoming
interested in what their kids are interested in.

There is only so far you can go here, of course, but your kids will
appreciate any effort you make at being a part of the world they live
in. A typical example of this is finding time to attend an event your
child is participating in, like a sporting event. Even when the
activity isn't something you particularly like, learn what you can
about it so that you can bond over it with your kids.

Lots of kids today are in the habit of spending each and every spare
moment in front of their television sets, computer screens or on their
phones. This is why it is important to be able to teach your kids how
to value free play. Aside from the organized activities that you have
enrolled them in, do not forget how valuable it is to do some old
fashioned playing at the park on the playground or during play dates
with other kids. Studies have proven that kids who don't get enough
play time are more likely to develop behavioral issues like
depression, ADD and aggression. A great way to help this along is to
have day trips as a family during the weekend that involve things like
walking, swimming, hiking and other outdoor activities. Lots of
parenting skills help your child develop properly and allow you to nip
problems in the bud before they get out of control. Whether it
includes being active at your child's school, encouraging your kids to
do things on their own, consistently applying discipline when it is
needed--there is an art to parenting and you can always learn
something new.
